Her neoliberal policies, faith in a free market economy and a firm belief in individualism turned British culture from a ‘we’ to a ‘me’ generation. The deregulation of the banking system meant that credit was easy to come by and consumer spending was rising fast. This growth in consumption was becoming more and more evident in Britain in the mid-1980s. The then new shopping malls, situated on the edges of cities, were the new cathedrals of consumption, and the new ‘retail parks’, with their supermarkets and furniture stores, were the parish churches. Shopping and the purchasing of an off-the-shelf lifestyle were becoming new leisure activities. In addition, ‘Thatcherism’ also encouraged home ownership. Fundamental to her idea was that government, which had built between a third and half of all homes for the previous three decades, should step back. Councils could no longer build council housing. The market would provide. Houses would be built by housebuilders. As a result, new large private housing estates, aimed at newly aspirational individuals, were rapidly becoming a feature of most towns and cities. A time of empire, a time of full employment, a time of paternalistic benevolent mill owners and a time of the pastoral and picturesque. This desire for an illusion of stability was serviced by the heritage industry; with its themed industrial museums and country houses, heritage offered a novel (if spurious) sense of place and identity to a country which had lost its old ‘eternal truths’ of industry and empire, reassuring us that our lives are better in the new service economy than those of our parents in ‘the bad old days’ of the industrial past. But these heritage centres did not recover the past-they re-created it. The heritage process irons out differences, glosses over contradiction and unifies all the conflicting dynamics of the past into a single romantic and idealised version of it. It is a place to get through, a place on the way to somewhere else. Of course, it could be argued that there is a certain reality to all of this. After all, the Elephant has one of the most transitory populations in London, many do not settle here for long. This is a place with a continual history of dramatic change: from the bustling and fashionable 1930’s with its picture houses and mega-churches, through the devastation of the Nazi bombings, and on to the construction of large-scale modernist estates like the Heygate. As this estate and others await demolition, and a new era of massive redevelopment around the Elephant begins, it seems that, from a historical perspective too, change is the only constant. The Elephant is continually and permanently liminal. Paul Reas tells a completely different story. He reminds us that, however transitory, the human face of the Elephant cannot and must not be blurred into invisibility. I am a newcomer to these parts. Months ago I was living in the City of London, deep in the engine room of global capitalism. Here decisions continue to be made that affect the entire world. At every moment, at the press of a button on a computer screen, billions of pounds, dollars and yen are traded and moved around the world. This creates another form of distance, for few of those who work in those great glass palaces can see the consequences of their actions on individual lives. High up in those skyscrapers that dominate the landscape it is easy enough to see the Elephant and Castle. But it is a view from a distance, a view that is not populated by faces and stories. From there, one is unable to see the human reality of work and pain and loss. Paul Reas brings all this to the surface. His photographs of incense pots, for instance, bought from the open market in the Elephant, are fascinating indications of the sort of social pressures that the people of this area are subjected to. The point of these pots is that their contents are burned to provide help in particular situations: “break up”, “court case”, “money drawing”, and “fast luck”. The idea that such problems can be sorted out with the purchase of a can of incense from a Rastafarian bloke on the market is powerfully indicative of the hidden desperation of so many lives, lives that are too often hidden from view. And it is the feeling of anonymity, of not mattering or being seen, that generates a widespread sense of worthlessness. Allowing all this to fester is what creates the conditions for periodic explosions of violence. As Paul Reas was completing this project of photographs, his own family home in Bradford was being compulsory purchased by the council to make way for redevelopment. It is his sensitivity to the human cost of ‘change and decay’ that makes this collection of images so poignant. These wholesale closures resulted in many bitter industrial disputes with the then Conservative government. In South Wales the process started with the national steel strikes of 1980 and would culminate with the bitter dispute of the miners’ strike of 1984. South Wales, with its long history of heavy industry and political unrest , was hit particularly hard. By March 1985 the strike against pit closures was over, Margaret Thatcher (then British Prime Minister) was victorious and the miners made a reluctant but dignified return to work. What followed was a total closure of pits and the jobless miners of South Wales joined the ranks of the unemployed. The Welsh Development Agency (WDA) was a government organisation established to help regenerate the region and find a solution to the problems of high unemployment. Via a process of tax breaks, free rents and an available pool of labour, the WDA began to attract a new generation of industry to the region. On the sites of former collieries and on new industrial parks on the edges of towns, huge tin shed factories began to appear. Their purpose? To house the manufacturing processes for the newly emerging computer industry. But this was an industry for a new age, with different ideas about who made a good employee. They wanted to employ mainly women (who they claimed were best suited to the intricate assembly of electronic circuit boards) and they also wanted a workforce with no previous experience of work, one which had not been unionised. Thatcher’s emasculation of the trade union movement made this not only possible but increasingly desirable to employers. Paradoxically, an industry created to solve the unemployment of a predominantly male former workforce resulted in the employment of the wives and daughters of redundant miners and steel workers. These men, who had historically been the breadwinners, were now staying at home and women of the household were going out to work. At the time this was a large sociological shift in the region. Twenty six years ago, I was commissioned by Val Williams to produce work about my troubled relationship with my father for the Barbican exhibition, ‘Who’s Looking at The Family’. At the time I wrote, “For thirty-eight years I have carried this man inside me. He is a man I recognise but know nothing about. He is a man with no known history. A man of secrets and suspicion. A detached man. A lonely man? A man of greed and sarcasm. A silent man. A man of hypocrisy. A man of lies and double standards. An unemotional man. A dying man. The man is my father. For as long as I can remember my father has been an ‘absent presence’ in my life. Only ever there on Sundays and even then, a sleeping, silent figure in an armchair. Who was this man? Where did he go?..” Armed with a camera (an effective weapon/barricade) and the courage of a 38-year-old son, I returned to my childhood home to face the foreboding presence of him. I tried to make photographs that spoke of the emotional and psychological impact of this man on my life. Photographs that attempted to define the shape of my childhood, such as the image of ‘the stone’. A stone embedded in a piece of waste ground next to the house where I would spend hour upon hour digging in an effort to get to the bottom of it, trying to establish its shape and size. With hindsight, what an effective metaphor that act had become for the process of trying to uncover my identity. I photographed a moth trapped in a spiders’ web in the bathroom. At the time I saw the moth as being me: held in a suspended state waiting for the return. Only recently have I realised that the image of the moth also represents the entrapment of my father. Indeed, these early photographs only ever looked at the behaviour never the cause. They poked around in the shadow this man had cast upon my life but never considered the reasons my father might be the way he is. His strange obsessive-compulsive behaviour, like his refusal to ever throw anything away: drawers full of un- opened Christmas presents and thousands of plastic bags, the mood swings, the loud recurring nightmares and the suspicion and distrust of everybody. But it wasn’t all photographs: much of my father’s life was to be revealed. Like the other family in Leeds. The half sister I never new I had. The fact that ‘Reas’ was not the family name but one which was adopted by my fathers’ mother (a woman I never met) from a man she knew when her and my father lived in the U.S.A. And so, ten years since the original work, I went back to the house. Only this time it was empty: my parents having just been re-housed because the estate was to be demolished. Roaming around those bare rooms I could still feel the atmosphere of my childhood: trapped like dirt in the carpet. I felt like I was running out of time. I began the re-questioning of my father. Only this time I wouldn’t be intimidated by the silence. I would persist. Slowly. Very slowly, from the fading memory of a man who had locked things up for so long, a story started to emerge. The story of a fifteen-year-old boy (a boy the age my own son is now) who lied about his age to join the army at the beginning of World War 2. A boy who, as a paratrooper was involved in acts of sabotage behind enemy lines. A boy who, at the age of 18, was captured in Italy and transported across Europe to Poland. A boy who was held temporarily in a P.O.W camp until his “crime” against the Nazi Regime was discovered. As a soldier involved in “subversive” activity against the Third Reich my father was not afforded the protection of the Geneva Convention. And so, it was that this boy was loaded onto a cattle truck and transported, with women and children, to Auschwitz. On arrival he went through the process of “selection”. He was one of the lucky ones, he was assigned to work, along with 350 other allied troops, in the camps nearby factories. It was from one of these factories that, remarkably, he managed to escape. Travelling east under the cover of darkness he embarked on a long and harrowing journey where reason and morality were overtaken by the instinct to survive. This was a story, which was painstakingly pieced together, each fact and item of information being corroborated by endless trips to the Imperial War Museum, returning with archival material in an effort to stimulate his memory. Through long protracted conversations we connected in a way we’d never done before. Slowly all the resentment and pain on my part disappeared and all that was left was pity and understanding. It was one of only a handful of mines in Britain which still used pit ponies, and it did so right up until 1999, making Desmond’s the last mine in Britain to do so. I photographed in the mine over a period of months in 1982, whilst still a student on the Documentary Photography course at Newport. The camaraderie and banter amongst the men was reminiscent of my time working on building sites and I felt instantly at ease in their company. With hindsight, one can see clearly why I would have been attracted to Desmond’s as a subject. At this time, so much of documentary photography in Britain was concerned with the preservation of ways of life which were under threat of change, or photographers were drawn to the quaint and whimsical.
